Tips for getting your dog to walk nicely on a leash

Updated: Feb 19, 2020

1. Take frequents turns:

A straight path is easy for a dog to see, and they will try to lead you. Instead make frequent left and right turns, even completely turning around multiple times during the walk to get them following you instead of trying to lead.

2. Give them less leash:

A long leash is nice for a dog that walks nicely. But for a dog who walks poorly a leash that is short and loose makes it easier to control your dog.

3. Be verbal:

Tell your dog how you expect them to walk on a leash by giving them verbal cues for when they walk poorly, such as "no" in a stern tone, and for when they walk well such as "yes"/ "good" in a warm or excited tone.
